Buy Nothing Day, the Day Without Shopping

On 24 November, despite the rain forecast (the one that wets and the discounts), we went out to the streets, not to celebrate Black Friday, but the Buy Nothing Day

Estimated reading time: 45 seconds

The “Buy Nothing Day” is an international day of protest against consumerism, founded by artist Ted Dave in Canada in 1922. This day coincides strategically with "Black Friday" day, where stores offer great discounts and appeal to excessive and unconscious consumption.

In a world where the media and stores are constantly bombarding us with publicity and compelling offers, enticing the consumer to buy unnecessary products, Agora Aveiro broke this trend to provide alternatives to consumerism and get people to question their consumption habits.

At dawn on Friday, November 24, we woke up earlier to put (literally!) a hanger of rope with coupons made by us, at Rua dos Mercadores. "Happiness is not measured by sales", "Offer your time", "Use less, love more" and "No longer use? Offer to those who need it " were some of the phrases used in the coupons.
